Little Theatre’s Centenary Challenge Moves to Next Stage

We are delighted to announce that our Centenary Challenge Project has successfully moved a step closer to achievement as Leicester Drama Society has been granted planning permission for the proposed extension to the Little Theatre, on the old Anchor Centre site.  Click here for a video of the project.

Leicester Drama Society (LDS) will be 100 years young in 2022.  On 30th January, 1930, LDS opened The Little Theatre on the upper floor of the Rechabite Hall, in Dover Street and the Little Theatre, in Dover Street, Leicester, has been our home ever since!

Our Centenary Challenge project aims to extend and rejuvenate our much loved Theatre, providing improved, more sustainable facilities and enhanced theatrical experiences for our membership, audiences and local theatre communities.  The planned facilities include a much-needed new studio, rehearsal rooms, wardrobe and technical workshop.

Project Success and Progress so far

On 5th December, 2018 The City Mayor recorded the Decision “to sell the site of the former Anchor Centre, Dover Street to LDS in the sum of £1″, and prior to this, LCC will undertake the demolition of the Anchor Centre building.  This decision is subject to LDS obtaining planning permission and funding for the new Studio Theatre.

On 16th May, 2019, LDS obtained planning permission for the demolition of the former Anchor Centre and the construction of a 5 storey extension at the side of the Little Theatre in Dover Street.

Next steps: Demolition of Anchor Centre is currently being planned.  Engineering surveys will then take place.  Fundraising for 1st stage of new extension is in progress.

Please view this short video message from our Youth Theatre which vividly illustrates some of our problems.
