Leicester’s Little Theatre to receive £47,210 from second round of the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund

  • The Leicester Drama Society (LDS) is among more than 2,700 recipients to benefit from the latest round of awards from the £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund
  • This award will enable the theatre to re-open after 18 months dark

The Little Theatre in Dover Street Leicester has today received a grant of £47,210 from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help the organisation recover and reopen following closure I March 2020 due to the coronavirus.

More than £300 million has been awarded to thousands of cultural organisations across the country including The Little Theatre in the latest round of support from the Culture Recovery Fund, the Culture Secretary announced today.

The award will allow the theatre to put into place its plans to re-open in a COVID-safe manner, starting with its first show since March 2020, ‘Spread a Little Happiness’, on 22nd May. Part of the award is directed at the sustainability of the theatre moving forward, along with the modernisation of facilities and the improved safety of volunteers backstage.

Over £800 million in grants and loans has already been awarded to support almost 3,800 cinemas, performance venues, museums, heritage sites and other cultural organisations dealing with the immediate challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

The second round of awards made today will help organisations to look ahead to the spring and summer and plan for reopening and recovery. After months of closures and cancellations to contain the virus and save lives, this funding will be a much-needed helping hand for organisations transitioning back to normal in the months ahead.

Chair of Trustees, Andy Crooks, said: “With the lockdown roadmap in place and spring now upon us, there’s a huge desire by those who volunteer at the theatre to get back on and behind the stage, and from our audience to be entertained at our theatre. The award of this grant – which comes hard on the heels of an award of £154,865 made by the Culture Recovery Fund to us last October – is a huge vote of confidence in the The Little Theatre from the Arts Council. It will enable us to accelerate our opening plans and transform the theatre back into a vibrant hub of creativity for Leicester.

Our plans now include opening throughout the summer months, starting in July with a production of ‘Chariots of Fire’ to coincide with the opening of the Olympic Games. But before that we shall be staging a musical show, ‘Spread a Little Happiness’, and a drama called ’Class’, all in a COVID-secure way.”

The funding awarded today is from a £400 million pot which was held back last year to ensure the Culture Recovery Fund could continue to help organisations in need as the public health picture changed. The funding has been awarded by Arts Council England, as well as Historic England and National Lottery Heritage Fund and the British Film Institute.

All shows can be booked through the theatre’s website (thelittletheatre.net) or by calling the Box Office on 0116 255 1302.
