Sophocles’
Elektra
Studio Play
A new version by Frank McGuinness
Directed by John Guillain
Wednesday 19th - Saturday 22nd May 2010
Sophocles, 2500 years ago, wrote the play Electra which was performed in the style of that era. Frank McGuinness’s new adaptation has brought it successfully back to life and up-to-date without losing any of its originality.
It is a revenge play, comparable with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Both he and Electra live within dysfunctional families; both seek revenge, which Electra finally achieves. Within this excellent, modern version there are no ghosts to stimulate the action but we see and feel the powerful emotions of the Greek Theatre in performance guided by the Greek gods that haunt and watch over this exciting, modern and dramatic interpretation.
