Norman and Ethel Sayer are settling into their summer home for the forty-fourth year. Norman, a retired professor nearing eighty, is showing his age but is still eager for life. Ethel, ten years his junior, delights in all the small things that have enriched their life together.

This year their daughter and her fiancé leave his teenage son with her parents and he becomes the grandchild they have longed for. The holiday draws to a moving close with the knowledge that time is now against them – but perhaps another summer still awaits them on Golden Pond.
