Caught up in the romance of the past, Amanda Wingfield has aspirations for her son Tom and daughter Laura. Tom though has plans of his own, beyond home life and family responsibility - although both mother and son care deeply about the future of Laura. Crippled and shy, Laura finds it difficult to cope with the outside world and takes refuge in playing old records and in her glass menagerie. Amanda insists Tom invites a colleague for dinner, thinking a ‘gentleman caller’ might help Laura - a move that has fateful consequences.
