A headstrong and individualistic young woman, without purpose in her life, but with a certain power over men, eventually marries in order to obey the conventions of the day.
Has she made the right choice? Is her home-loving, intellectual husband enough for her? She very quickly feels trapped by her husband’s doting aunt and the expectation that they should produce an heir.
The reappearance into her life of an old friend with whom she has had a close relationship and whose Bohemian life style always excited her, plus the knowledge that he is now very close to an old school friend of hers, of whom she has always been jealous, drives her on a course of destruction, destroying others as she goes.
