In 1897 Emma Cranwell disappears. Three years later her parents find the girl in a hospital and bring her to their new home. Emma’s homecoming should be a happy one but her memory is damaged and there is much that she does not recognise, things that do not quite fit. Why has she such a horror of harmless household objects? Why has the family moved away from comfortable surroundings? What is the significance of the parents’ attitude towards their daughter? Behind these and other questions lies a mystery of chilling menace and danger to a poor, bewildered girl.
