Charley’s Aunt
By Brandon Thomas
Directed by Alan Chambers
Monday 28th June - Saturday 3rd July 2010
Charles Wykeham and Jack Chesney, undergraduates at Oxford University are anxious to entertain their girl friends, Amy and Kitty in their student quarters. However, to comply with Victorian etiquette they need a chaperone. When the intended chaperone, Charley’s Aunt - whom he has never, seen - fails to turn up, they persuade their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberley to impersonate her. High jinks abound aplenty and when the originally intended chaperone turns up fun and confusion begin in earnest.
Described as the “funniest farce ever written”, it enjoyed a long run of some four years when it was first produced in London in 1892 and the intervening years have not diminished the appeal of this witty and entertaining play.
