On a sunny day in August, Trish and Teddy Platt are planning a lunch party for several guests, whilst, at the same time, outside in the garden, preparations are taking place for the annual garden fête. Marital relations between the two have reached an all time low and communication between them is almost non-existent. Enter a variety of colourful characters - including a French film star, an influential novelist, a mistress and an infatuated daughter - and the fun begins! The day unfolds with hilarious and sometimes touching results.
